Toni took the next day off of work to spend with me, and while she was showering and getting ready for the day, I logged onto AOL as BLNJS. This time, there was no ominous error message, and I was greeted with the “You’ve Got Mail” audio file. I opened my mailbox, and the first thing I saw was a message from an external e-mail account. The sender’s name was “MamaSophia01” via Olympic Net, and the subject line was “Thank you for calling.” At some point last night, Johnny must have called his mother so that he could have a nice conversation with her without me eavesdropping or wondering why he wasn’t including me in his news reports, like when he told his mother, “I got a cat” instead of that he got a cat as a supposed birthday present for his boyfriend.

I deleted the e-mail without reading it. “I can ignore you too, Sophie,” I said quietly to the screen.
